Aeration is the process of pulling small finger-like cores of soil out of the lawn. The cores should ideally be 2.5-3 inches long. The length depends on how hard or compact the lawn is. The purpose is to:
- loosen compacted soil
- improve drainage
- increase water and fertilizer penetration and absorption
- improve heat and drought tolerance
- improve the effectiveness of weed control
So if you have heavily compacted soil, aerating once or twice every couple of years will dramatically improve your lawn, maximizing the effectiveness of your watering, fertilizer and weed control applications.
Aeration is a good idea if your lawn isn’t in the best shape. On the other hand, if you have a great looking lawn already, simply make aeration an annual part of your routine. As you can imagine, golf courses aerate their lawns several times each year.
